Local Adventures with Ally and Coach
When people meet my two greyhounds—Ally and Coach, both brindle beauties—they’re often surprised to learn how much they love a good hike. Sure, greyhounds are known for their speed, but what they truly live for? A daily sniffari.
I’m Christine, a proud board member of Connecticut Greyhound Adoption (CGA) and even prouder greyhound mom. Ally (5) and Coach (6) are both retired racers who have adapted beautifully to family life—and love spending time outdoors exploring Connecticut’s trails.

Greyhounds Hike at Their Own Pace
Unlike high-energy breeds that need constant activity, greyhounds are more about quality than quantity when it comes to exercise. One adventure a day—whether a short hike or long stroll—is usually followed by hours (and hours) of sleep. So don’t let the word “hike” intimidate you.
Greyhound Energy: Short Bursts, Long Naps
The biggest misconception about greyhounds? That they need tons of exercise. The reality? One walk or light hike per day, and they’re ready for a nap marathon. After our morning adventure, Ally and Coach usually snooze well into the afternoon (and let’s be honest, most of the evening too).
If you’re thinking about adopting a greyhound and wondering what kind of activity level they need, here’s a look at some of our favorite local spots.
So whether you live near a wooded trail, suburban sidewalk, or urban greenway, greyhounds are adaptable, easygoing companions who simply love to be with you—especially outdoors.
Our Favorite Greyhound-Friendly Trails in New Haven County
Racebrook Tract – Orange, CT
This peaceful woodland trail is one of our go-tos. Shaded, quiet, and full of earthy smells—perfect for a dog-led sniffari. Coach likes to cool off his paws in the creek, and Ally always finds a new human to make friends with.
Turkey Hill Preserve Loop – Orange, CT
This loop offers a mix of open fields and wooded areas. It’s rarely crowded, which makes it ideal for greyhounds who are still adjusting to life outside of the kennel.
Farmington Canal Heritage Trail – Hamden to Cheshire
For a paved, scenic route with plenty of places to explore, this trail is unbeatable. We typically park in Hamden and head north. There are benches along the way for breaks and plenty of other dogs to say hello to.
