Volunteer Spotlight: Leslie Travis

About Leslie’s Greyhounds

How She Got Involved

We adopted two greyhounds over 20 years ago and fell in love with the breed. We knew we’d adopt again once our kids were older. A few years ago, we were ready, started researching adoption groups, and that’s when we found CGA.

Why She Volunteers

I love educating the public on the breed. There are so many misconceptions about caring for greyhounds and what they need to thrive in a home environment.

What She Wishes More People Knew

Greyhounds don’t necessarily need extra exercise beyond what any other breed needs. My two have a big fenced-in yard to run in, and most days I can barely get them to trot. They’d much rather take a leisurely stroll and nap.

Her Advice for New Adopters

For dogs coming straight from the track, remember they have no idea how to be a pet. Everything is new for them. Be patient and gentle, and they will be your best friend.

Dogs She’ll Never Forget

Our first greyhound’s racing name was Iron Man Robbert; we called him Travis. About a year later, we adopted Odd Teddy, whom we called Ty. We still smile every time they’re mentioned. They were the absolute best dogs.

Fun Memory

We picked up our first greyhound the same day we closed on our first home. I was unpacking boxes of plates and glasses, tossing the wrapping paper on the floor as I worked. After a while, I realized I hadn’t seen Travis in a bit, so I called for him. He was lying right beside me, buried under all the paper.

Volunteers like Leslie make everything we do possible.
