Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy

Game master and collar maker

If you’ve ever attended CGA’s annual picnic, you’ve probably seen Kathy and her sister Mary. Kathy is the one running the greyhound games, a beloved picnic tradition that includes judging the longest tail, hosting the roo-ing contest, crowning the largest dog and more. But her work for CGA goes well beyond one afternoon a year: Kathy also makes the amazing collars for every one of our fosters.

Love at first sight

Kathy’s greyhound story started with a trip to Petco in 2005, where she spotted a group of greyhounds and fell in love on the spot. She took home an application, filled it out, and before she knew it, our very own Nancy Javor was doing her home visit. That opened the door to her first greyhound, Indy, and soon after, Kathy became a CGA volunteer.

“They are one of the gentlest and kindest animals I have ever had,” she says. “I wanted to give them a second chance to have a wonderful home and loving family.”

Nine greyhounds and counting

Kathy has shared her home with nine greyhounds. Today, that includes Johnny, 12½, and Cruise, 9½. Choosing a favorite is hard, but one boy holds a special place in her heart: Oliver. “He was a misunderstood boy,” she says. Kathy and her family fostered him for about a year before deciding they simply had to keep him. “He turned out to be one of the sweetest boys we’ve ever had.”

Kathy’s advice

For anyone thinking about adopting or volunteering, Kathy keeps it simple:

Once you get one, you’re going to want another, because they’re such great dogs.

When she’s not volunteering, you’ll find her playing with her pups and, of course, making collars for CGA’s greyhounds. And if you’re lucky enough to catch her with a hound nearby, chances are you’ll find her planting a kiss on its nose. We tried to find a photo of Kathy without a greyhound smooch in it. Spoiler alert: we couldn’t!

Thank you, Kathy, for everything you do for our hounds!

Volunteers like Kathy make everything we do possible.
