How to Adopt a Greyhound in Connecticut or Rhode Island
If you’ve ever met a greyhound, you know they’re more than just fast—they’re gentle, affectionate, and surprisingly laid-back. At Connecticut Greyhound Adoption (CGA), we help retired racing greyhounds find loving homes throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island. If you’re thinking about adopting, here’s what you need to know.

Why Greyhounds?
Greyhounds are known for their sweet personalities and calm nature. They’re often described as “couch potatoes” and are perfectly content lounging next to you after a short walk. Despite their racing past, they adapt well to home life—yes, even in apartments!
Who Can Adopt a Greyhound?
We adopt to individuals and families across Connecticut, from New Haven to Hartford, Fairfield County to the shoreline–as well to Rhode Island residents. Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or looking to expand your pack, we’ll help you find a greyhound that fits your lifestyle.
The CGA Adoption Process
- Submit an application – Start by filling out our online adoption form.
- Talk to a volunteer – We’ll reach out to learn more about your home, lifestyle, and what you’re looking for.
- Meet the dogs – You’ll have a chance to meet greyhounds at one of our events or by appointment.
- Home visit – A volunteer will visit your home to ensure it’s greyhound-ready (don’t worry, it’s not about perfection—just safety).
- Match + placement – Once approved, we’ll match you with a greyhound that suits your needs.
Costs and Care
The adoption fee is $500, which helps cover medical care, transportation, and supplies. All of our greyhounds are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and heartworm tested before placement. We’ll guide you through diet, sleep setup (they love dog beds!), and what to expect in the first few weeks. Answers to more questions can be found in our FAQ.
Not Ready to Adopt Yet? Try Fostering.
Fostering a greyhound is a great way to help without a long-term commitment. It gives the dog a soft place to land while they wait for their forever home—and it helps us learn more about their personality. Learn more about becoming a foster.
